Before earning his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, he received a research grant from the March of Dimes to investigate congenital visual defects. His research findings were subsequently published in a scientific journal. Dr. MacDonald completed his surgical internship and residency in otolaryngology at Washington University and Barnes Hospital where he received the Basic Science Research Award in the division of Plastic Surgery for his work on nerve regeneration.
